Does our state network site say enuogh about us that we don’t need this? Do we want to put this document on our state network site?
How might we want to reconceive this document (ala NCTE policy statements)?
Is this a place where NWPM could incorporate a stance on using more digital literacies?
Do we need to address the Common Core Standards?
Strengths
The first few paragraphs, before GLCEs, still rings true for our philosophy
Last paragraph is strong – move the closing paragraph to the beginning, then lead into other types of writing with different purposes/audiences/contexts/situations
Writing may be the most important tool that students have in this century
Weaknesses
Language that is used in here does not align with the Common Core, so it is a “dated document” for that reason (need to change language from GLCE/HSCE)
We are a writing project, but the term “writing” means something different for lots of different people (e.g., composing in digital spaces)
The statement lacks the passion that we normally expect from NWP work – we need some “oomph”
Have we outgrown the table?
Need to contextualize the NWPM sites within the larger NWP network/history
Opportunities
We have an opportunity to define what we mean by writing
Could NWPM give a mini-grant to a teacher/team to update this document?
Purposes:
Advertising NWPM on MDE site
Taking a stance on the Common Core Standards/compare these to GLCE/HSCE
Common Core reduces reading/writing to argumentative and informational writing by upper high school; little narrative – this is all about college readiness
To assert a passionate stance/goal(s); filtering the Common Core
Create something that is more interactive than a PDF file – telling our story through something more than a text document
Have a more visual aspect to this document
Highlight one teacher from each sitein the booklet; make it an inquiry project at the site with one teacher overseeing the work
This way we can show videos to our congress people about the work of the state network
Still create a “one pager” for PD?
Get some of the terms related to 21st centruy literacies into our statement

Ask Lynnette to take down the current document because it is outdated, with the intent to create another document by the end of January (review the document at the NWPM Directors retreat)
Invite each NWPM site to create a 1 minute video that would help highlight the work of NWPM sites. Then we can all link it to our individual sites and NWPM site/wiki/MDE site
